She believes her sister is Sarah and her friends, also students who act a certain romantic notion of becoming martyrs for the cause of freedom and justice. As the urban white in an attempt to close the institution, Mary is quiet and courageous help to the local Underground Railroad movement involved. Mary, Sarah, and some of the other girls are attractive, fairly well-developed characters. Prudence Crandall is less well understood. Was she a courageous defender of equality, or a pawn in the hands of the abolitionists, who used it to their advantage? Was she a strong woman, independent, or was it dependent on the support of his family, especially his father? It is never clear. At the end she married a man with questionable motives seem opportunistic and have swapped their dreams, to have a man. Although there are many exciting moments in the story, the plot moves slowly overall.
